What is the US Dollar Index (DXY)?+
The US Dollar Index measures the dollar against a fixed, geometrically weighted basket of six currencies: the euro, Japanese yen, British pound, Canadian dollar, Swedish krona and Swiss franc. It is an index measured in points, not an exchange rate between two currencies.
How does DXY measure dollar strength?+
A rising DXY means the dollar is strengthening against its weighted basket; a falling DXY means it is weakening against that basket. It does not mean the dollar moved in the same direction against every currency, and it does not measure domestic purchasing power.
Is the US dollar strong today?+
The daily brief compares the two latest completed index sessions and shows their dates. The chart gives a separate intraday view. Whether the dollar is strong also depends on the currency and timeframe you compare it with; DXY is one measure of USD strength.
What currencies are in the Dollar Index?+
The basket contains EUR at 57.6%, JPY at 13.6%, GBP at 11.9%, CAD at 9.1%, SEK at 4.2% and CHF at 3.6%. These are fixed index weights, not live performance percentages. The euro has the largest influence.
Why does the US dollar strengthen or weaken?+
Relative interest-rate expectations, economic growth, inflation, capital flows and demand for liquidity can affect the dollar. Changes in other basket economies also matter. A price movement alone does not establish which factor caused it.
What does a DXY reading of 100 mean?+
The index was set to 100 for its March 1973 base period. A reading of 100 refers to that historical weighted-basket baseline; it does not mean one dollar equals 100 units of another currency or that the dollar is fairly valued.
Is a strong dollar good or bad?+
The effects depend on who is affected. A stronger dollar can reduce the dollar cost of some imports and overseas spending, while making US exports more expensive for foreign buyers. It can also increase the local-currency burden of dollar debt for some overseas borrowers.
How are DXY and EUR/USD related?+
The euro is the largest DXY component. All else equal, a lower EUR/USD supports a higher DXY and a higher EUR/USD weighs on it. The other five currencies also contribute, so the relationship is not a fixed one-for-one move.
Is DXY the same as a currency strength meter?+
No. DXY tracks the dollar against one fixed six-currency basket. A currency strength meter can compare several currencies using different pairs, timeframes and methods. Its results need not match DXY.
Are Dollar Index quotes live?+

The TradingView chart uses Capital.com’s DXY CFD proxy; its technical rating uses TradingView DXY. Both update according to the provider’s market-data permissions.
