Forex Spread Cost Calculator
See how spreads and commission affect your trading costs. Calculate the cost per round trip, the equivalent cost in pips, and the total across repeated trades.
Estimate your trading costs
Turn spreads and commission into a clear cost per trade.
Costs are shown in USD, the pair’s quote currency. If your broker charges commission in another currency, convert that rate before entering it.
Illustrative inputs, not live broker quotes. One full spread is used per round trip, assuming the spread stays unchanged. Financing and slippage are excluded.
All-in cost per trade
USD 1.90
Spread plus entry-and-exit commission.
Cost in pips

Estimated movement needed to cover these costs, with an unchanged spread.1.2 pips × USD 1.00 per pip

Total across 20 trades
Same inputs on every round trip.
- Spread across all trades
- USD 24.00
- Commission across all trades

These are estimated transaction costs, not a separate spread debit or a forecast of trading losses. Actual entry and exit spreads can differ. Check broker minimum fees and volume tiers. Amounts are not converted to your account currency.
How to use the forex spread cost calculator
- Choose a forex pair and position size in standard lots. Initial values are examples; selecting another pair resets commission to zero.
- Enter the spread in pips, or choose Bid / Ask prices to calculate it from a quote. Use the correct pip size rather than broker points or pipettes.
- Enter commission per standard lot in the pair’s quote currency. Select whether the rate is per side or already covers the round trip.
- Set the number of identical round-trip trades. Review the spread cost, total commission, all-in cost and cost expressed in pips.
Forex spread cost formula
The spread is the difference between the ask price and bid price. A buyer enters at the ask and a seller enters at the bid. This tool estimates the quoted transaction cost separately from any market profit or loss.
Spread in pips = (Ask − Bid) ÷ Pip size
Pip value = Pip size × 100,000 × Lots
Spread cost = Spread in pips × Pip value
All-in cost = Spread cost + Round-trip commission
Cost in pips = All-in cost ÷ Pip value
A pip is 0.0001 for the listed non-JPY pairs and 0.01 for JPY-quoted pairs. At 0.10 lots, EUR/USD has a pip value of USD 1, while USD/JPY has a pip value of JPY 100. These amounts are in the quote currency, not necessarily your account currency.
Read more about pip values in the Pip Value Calculator.
Worked example: EUR/USD spread plus commission
Suppose you trade 0.10 lots of EUR/USD with a 1.2-pip spread and USD 7 round-trip commission per standard lot. These are hypothetical inputs, not a broker price quote.
Spread cost
USD 1.20
Round-trip commission
USD 0.70
All-in cost
USD 1.90
The pip value is USD 1, so USD 1.90 of transaction costs equals 1.9 pips. Across 20 identical round trips, the estimated total is USD 38: USD 24 in spread costs and USD 14 in commissions.
Per-side versus round-trip commission
A per-side rate applies to both entry and exit. A round-trip rate already includes both. For example, USD 3.50 per side per standard lot is equivalent to USD 7 per standard lot round trip. Multiply that total by your lot size to estimate commission for your position.
| Rate per standard lot | Basis | Cost at 0.10 lots |
|---|---|---|
| USD 3.50 | Per side | USD 0.70 round trip |
| USD 7.00 | Round trip | USD 0.70 round trip |
| USD 0.00 | Spread only | USD 0.00 commission |
The spread is handled separately. Under an unchanged-spread assumption, a complete round trip incurs one full spread equivalent, not two full spreads. If entry and exit spreads differ, actual cost differs from this simplified estimate.
Compare total costs, not just advertised spreads
A narrower spread can come with a separate commission. A spread-only account may include the broker’s charge in a wider spread. Compare the total at your actual position size and expected trading conditions, including any minimum fees or volume tiers.
Spreads can change with liquidity and market conditions. Financing, slippage and currency-conversion fees are outside this calculator. It does not rank brokers or provide live spreads.
For a broker explanation of the pricing model, see OANDA’s spread-plus-commission guide. Its charges depend on the applicable account and region.
When using execution prices in a profit or risk calculator, do not subtract the same spread again if it is already reflected in the entry and exit prices.

Spreads, commission, pip values and calculation assumptions.
How do you calculate forex spread cost?
Multiply the spread in pips by the pip value for your position size. For EUR/USD, one standard lot has a pip value of USD 10. A 1.2-pip spread therefore costs approximately USD 12 per round trip when the spread stays unchanged.
How is spread calculated from bid and ask?
Subtract bid from ask, then divide by the pair's pip size. For EUR/USD, bid 1.08500 and ask 1.08512 give a 0.00012 price difference, or 1.2 pips. JPY-quoted pairs use a pip size of 0.01 instead of 0.0001.
Do I pay the spread twice when opening and closing?
The calculator uses one full quoted spread per complete round trip under an unchanged-spread assumption. It does not double that spread for entry and exit. If the spread changes, actual transaction costs can differ from this estimate.
What is the difference between per-side and round-trip commission?
Per-side commission applies once at entry and once at exit. A rate of USD 3.50 per side per standard lot is USD 7 round trip per standard lot. A round-trip rate already includes entry and exit and is not doubled.
Which currency should I use for commission?
Enter commission in the selected pair's quote currency. For EUR/USD that is USD; for USD/JPY it is JPY. If your broker quotes commission in a different currency, convert the rate first. This calculator does not fetch exchange rates or convert costs into your account currency.
What do the total cost in pips and number of trades mean?
Cost in pips is the total spread and commission divided by the position's pip value. It estimates the price movement needed to cover those costs under an unchanged spread. The number of trades multiplies the cost for identical round trips with the same lot size, spread and commission.
Can I use this for a spread-only account?
Yes. Set commission to zero. For a commission-based account, enter the spread and the commission separately. All example values are illustrative and are not live broker quotes.
Does this include swap, slippage or broker minimum fees?
No. The estimate includes only the entered spread and proportional commission. Financing, swap, slippage, currency-conversion fees, minimum commissions and volume tiers are excluded. Check your broker's pricing and execution conditions.
